If you’re looking to take your ice skating skills up a notch, you need to learn some tricks.
01 THE SALCHOW
This jump is named after its inventor, Ulrich Salchow, and is one of the most basic jumps in figure skating. To execute a Salchow, approach the jump from an edge and glide into it while keeping your free leg extended behind you.
As you take off, tuck your free leg underneath your body and land on the back outside edge of your skating foot.

02 THE TOE LOOP
The Toe Loop is another basic jump that can be executed from either a forward or backward approach. When jumping from a forward approach, take off from the inside edge of your skating foot and tuck your free leg underneath you as you rotate in the air. For a backward approach, take off from the outside edge of your skating foot and extend your free leg behind you as you rotate. In both cases, land on the back outside edge of your skating foot.
03 THE LUTZ
The Lutz is a bit more advanced than the Salchow and Toe Loop, and can only be executed from a backward approach.
As you glide backwards into the jump, take off from the outside edge of your skating foot and extend your free leg behind you. Tuck your free leg underneath your body as you rotate in the air, and land on the back outside edge of your other skating foot.

06 THE BUNNY HOP
The Bunny Hop is a basic ice skating move that can be done forwards, backwards, or even in a circle. To do this trick, simply bend your knees and jump up into the air. As you jump, make sure to tuck your legs underneath you so that you land on both of your skate blades at the same time. You can also add a little twist to the Bunny Hop by turning your body as you jump for extra style.
07LUNGES
Lunges are a basic figure skating move that can be done in many different ways. To do a lunge, start by skating forwards and then transfer your weight to one leg as you bend the other leg behind you.
As you lunge, make sure to keep your back straight and your head up so that you don’t fall backwards. You can also add a little jump as you lunge for extra style. To do a backward lunge, simply do the same thing but skate backwards instead of forwards.

09 SPINS
Spinning is a fun and relatively easy ice skating trick that looks impressive when executed correctly. There are many different types of spins, but the most basic is the sit spin. To do a sit spin, start by assuming a sitting position on the ice with your legs crossed in front of you. Then, push off from the ice and begin spinning. As you spin, tuck your head down and bring your legs up into a fetal position. To stop spinning, simply uncross your legs and let them fall back down to the ice.
